The tradition of sending Christmas cards to family and friends has become less common, but I still love to send (and receive!) Christmas greetings.
In my entrance I display the cards we receive on a string I have hung along the ceiling, just like my Nana used to do. Every year I hope it will be filled with beautiful Christmas cards from loved ones near and far.
On a snowy January evening, I sit on a brown leather sofa in my living room. The fireplace is on and the tiffany lamp beside me gives a soft glow to the room. I select something to watch on TV. Scissors, a hole-punch, ribbon and Christmas cards lay on the table in front of me. I am ready to repurpose Christmas cards into next year’s gift tags.
Here’s how to make gift tags:
- Cut out images from the cards. Make sure there isn’t any writing on the back.
- Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of the image.
- Cut a piece of ribbon about five inches long. Fold the ribbon in half and put the fold through the front of the hole.
- Secure the ribbon by threading the ends through the loop created by the fold and pull snug.
Now you have unique gift tags with room to write personalized messages on the back. A special touch to any gift!

I remember grandma’s handmade birthday and Christmas cards. I loved them. Making these adds more heart to the gift-giving process.
