When you smell these soft, spiced hermit cookies baking in the oven your memory will take you back to Nana’s kitchen.

- 1 Electric mixer
- 2 cookie sheets
Ingredients
- 1 cup Raisins
- Water
- 1 ¾ cup All-purpose flour
- 1 tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Salt
- ½ tsp Ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp Allspice
- 1/8 tsp Ground nutmeg
- ½ cup Shortening
- 1 cup Brown sugar lightly packed
- 2 Eggs
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 1 cup Chopped nuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Place raisins in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then turn off the heat and let them sit while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
- In a medium mixing bowl, blend dry ingredients together.
- In a second bowl, cream shortening and brown sugar until smooth.
- Beat in eggs, one at a time.
- Mix in vanilla.
- Stir in the flour mixture.
- Drain raisins well.
- Add raisins and nuts to the cookie dough and stir.
- Cover and chill the dough in the refrigerator for an hour.
- Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a baking sheet.
- Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
