Even for everyday, an attractive table is inviting. It tells your family, “Come, relax for a meal and visit with me.”
Table Settings Guidelines
- Plates and cutlery should be 1 inch in from the edge of the table.
- Cutlery should be close together but not touching.
- Cutlery should be aligned with the bottom of the plate.
- The knife and spoon should be on the right of the plate, the fork on the left.
- Only set the cutlery that is needed for the meal.
- The glass should be placed above the knife and spoon.
Here is some excellent information and diagrams on how to set a table.
Table Coverings
Table coverings, whether a tablecloth, table runner or place mats, are used for a variety of reasons, but there is no rule to use them or not to use them. Just make sure whatever you choose to use is not full of wrinkles.
Napkins
Napkins, cloth or paper, are placed at each place setting under the fork or on top of the plate. For a special occasion you may want to fold the napkins attractively to add a special touch.
Centerpieces
If you choose to put a centerpiece on the table, keep it small and simple. Don’t make the table look crowded or allow it to interfere with conversation across the table. A couple taper candles in the center of the table will often do.
Place cards
Place cards are a special touch, but not necessary. However, if you’re hosting a meal with more than six people other than family you may want to use them. They can be handy to accommodate someone who needs a special chair or cushion, or to put the left-handed person on a corner so elbows aren’t colliding throughout the meal. It’s also a good opportunity to mix up the guests so they have a chance to visit with someone they don’t normally see.
For special occasions, you can place a special mint chocolate at each place setting to be enjoyed after the meal.
